81 years old. He has been living on his own for 40 years in Patagonia. Must see video for anyone who likes to travel, be alone, or simply likes Patagonia. (be sure to watch all four parts)

For this episode of Far Out, VICE went to Chilean Patagonia to meet Faustino Barrientos, one of Lake O’Higgins’ most infamous inhabitants.

Lake O’Higgins comprises a portion of the border between Chile’s Aysén region and Argentina’s Santa Cruz province. Since 1965, Faustino Barrientos has lived alone on the shores the lake, in a house built from the remains of a shipwrecked fishing vessel. He’s a pastoralist, living mostly off the land and his livestock, with few modern amenities. His nearest neighbors are in Villa O’Higgins, a small community of several hundred people, 25 miles away, accessible only by a two-day horseback ride through rugged mountain animal paths. Every few years, Faustino makes this ride to sell his cattle in town.

Currently 81 years old, Faustino is reaching the end of his life, and his self-imposed isolation is being encroached upon by the forces of government, economy, and tourism. In December 2011, VICE went to document his lifestyle and speak with him about the changing face of Patagonia and the gaucho lifestyle.

Must know knot from Siberia. Especially useful when wearing gloves.

Cached copy from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siberian_hitch

Siberian Hitch (or Evenk knot) is a knot used to attach a rope to an object. The hitch is thought to have originated from the Evenk people of Siberia.[citation needed] It is a quick release hitch often used by Ray Mears during his bushcraft television series. The hitch is known for the ease in which it can be tied even whilst wearing gloves or mittens in cold climates. This hitch is also slipped and therefore can be released by pulling the short end of the rope.[1]

It consists basically of three loops. The first is made by looping the rope around the object to which it is to be attached (leaving enough length of rope at the end). In the end is then made a loop, which is given a half twist and bent around the main rope. The remaining end is then looped again and bent around the other side of the main rope and inserted into the previous loop. This is a structural description. There are also ’shortcuts’ to this, as shown in the external link.

Again, lots of Northern Lights alerts, but the difficulty is to decide when to go, as the sky also needs to be clear to be able to see them. And it has to be cold too. And it’s better (more enjoyable) if there is no wind. I guess I was quite inspired that evening as I got all of that: a cold clear night, no wind, lots of Northern Lights (many of which I will not take any photos of and enjoy from the warmth of my sleeping bag instead).
